The online music production space is inconsistent. While there are talented producers out there, the lack of industry gatekeeping means quality and professionalism varies massively. You’ve probably experienced this yourself with other music industry “professionals”, I know I have, and I regularly hear concerning stories from clients about past experiences.

Issues include: producers disappearing mid-project without delivering files (even your own recordings), not hitting targets, bad mixes, uninspiring production, not understanding your vision, or simply not following through.

And there’s another issue: It’s almost guaranteed you will lose objectivity when working on your own music. At some point you’ll question if it’s good enough or “finished”. It doesn’t sound like your favourite records, but you might not be able to pinpoint why.

At this point, most people assume it needs a mix, and this will fix everything.

It won’t. (And I say this as someone who loves mixing.)

There are plenty of mixers who’ll take your money and might even make your track sound better, but they won’t tell you when the arrangement could be more effective, the vocal melodies could be more memorable, or the sample choices could better serve the track, let alone work with you to improve them.

They’ll polish what you give them because that’s their job, but they won’t go further than that. 

The result? A professionally mixed track that still doesn’t feel right because the fundamental issues were never addressed.
You’re left wondering if you chose the wrong mixer, when what you actually needed was someone to look at your track as a whole and beyond just the mix.
